Listening to a lecture from a Forensic Psychologist a while back, he made a statement that has stuck with me. He said that when it comes to a subject that a person has no previous knowledge of the first thing they hear on that subject will become fact for them. This doesn’t take into account something so outlandish as to be easily dismissed (you were born a rabbit) but it does explain why myths and misunderstandings persist in so many areas.
When shown how to handle a training situation ask these questions:
- Is this creating temporary inhibition or is learning taking place?
In other words, is this creating fear or understanding?
- Can anyone in my family safely apply this method?
- Is the behavior finding another outlet?
